Jason Williams Claims Seth Curry Is A Better Player Than John Stockton
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Jason Williams' recent remarks on the Players TV podcast about preferring Seth Curry over John Stockton have stirred up controversy in the basketball community.

"Nah, he ain't better than Seth Curry. John Stockton was good, but I'm taking Seth. Yeah, cause Seth can shoot."

Williams, known for his flashy style of play during his NBA career, made the bold claim, asserting that he would choose Seth Curry due to his shooting ability. Williams' critique of Stockton's assist record also warrants examination.

While it's true that Stockton holds the NBA's all-time record for assists, Williams suggested that Stockton's tally may have been inflated due to alleged stat-padding. However, even discounting a portion of Stockton's assists, he still remains head and shoulders above Seth Curry in terms of playmaking ability and court vision.

Ultimately, while Seth Curry is undoubtedly a talented player, comparing him to a Hall of Famer like John Stockton seems misplaced. Stockton's impact on the game goes beyond statistics, as he revolutionized the point guard position with his exceptional passing, leadership, and basketball IQ.

Williams' remarks may have sparked debate, but the consensus remains that Stockton's contributions to the game far outweigh Seth Curry's shooting prowess.

Stats And Resume Show How Pointless This Debate Is

The debate over whether Seth Curry is a better player than John Stockton seems futile when examining their statistics and resumes side by side.

In terms of statistics, John Stockton's numbers speak for themselves. Averaging 13.1 points, 10.5 assists, 2.7 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game over his career, Stockton's all-around contributions to the game are unmatched.

While Seth Curry's scoring ability is notable, with averages of 10.4 points, 2.1 assists, 2.0 rebounds, 0.7 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game, they pale in comparison to Stockton's impressive stat line.

While it's undeniable that Seth Curry is a proficient shooter, boasting a career three-point percentage of 43.1% making 862 three-pointers on 2,001 attempts, it's important to analyze Stockton's shooting prowess as well.

Despite not being primarily known for his scoring, Stockton was no slouch from beyond the arc. Over his illustrious career, Stockton maintained a respectable three-point shooting percentage of 38.4%, making 845 three-pointers on 2,203 attempts.

Furthermore, when comparing shooting efficiency, Stockton's career shooting splits of .515-.384-.826 are remarkably similar to Seth Curry's .471-.431-.864 shooting line. In fact, Stockton's true shooting percentage of .608 even surpasses Seth's .604, indicating that Stockton was a highly efficient scorer despite not garnering the same attention as prolific shooters like Curry.

Moving on to their resumes, the difference becomes even more pronounced. While Seth Curry has yet to make an All-Star appearance or win any major accolades in the NBA, John Stockton boasts an illustrious career filled with achievements.

With 10 All-Star selections, 11 All-NBA team nods, 5 All-NBA Defensive team honors and 9 NBA assists leader titles, Stockton's impact on the game is undeniable. Additionally, his 2 NBA steals leader titles and status as the NBA's all-time assists leader with 15,806 assists further solidify his legacy as a true basketball legend.

Furthermore, Stockton's induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame cements his status as one of the greatest players in NBA history. His contributions to the game, both statistically and in terms of leadership, have left an indelible mark on basketball.

While Seth Curry is undoubtedly a talented player in his own right, the comparison to John Stockton seems unjustified given Stockton's superior statistics and resume. Stockton's impact on the game transcends mere numbers, and his legacy as one of the greatest point guards of all time remains unchallenged.
